Frequently Asked Questions About Cross Pens & Other Products

Why do I need a quality writing instrument when there are less expensive disposable pens available today?

Many people believe that a refillable quality writing instrument has to be expensive. This is not true. One of Cross' most popular refillable pens is the Classic Century® Chrome ball-point which has a suggested retail price of HK$170.00 and a lifetime guarantee. Your Classic Century® ball-point pen will last as long as you need it and can be refilled with a new ink cartridge for only HK$18.00. The process of refilling our Cross pens is made simple since it does not involve rings, screws or any small loose parts. Just think of all the pens that are thrown away when we could help our environment by investing in a refillable pen.

How is Cross able to guarantee their writing instruments for a lifetime?

Cross puts its pens through a battery of rigorous quality tests. They are suspended in a salt water chamber for over four days to test for corrosion. The pen mechanism is twisted over 100,000 times or the equivalent of over 20 years of normal use. To withstand such rigorous testing, a Cross pen has to be made of excellent quality.

What is a Selectip Pen?

"Selectip" Pen is named "Selectip Rolling Ball Pen" because it currently ships with a Rolling Ball refill. It will, however, accept other styles of refills such as ball point, and porous point in a variety of colors or a yellow document marker. The name "Selectip" was established to indicate the the owner can actually "select a tip" or refill type.

What parts and materials go into making a quality writing instrument?

Most quality writing instruments are made of at least 15 different parts. The main component or the body of the pen can be made out of either metal or plastic resin. In general, a body made out of metal is much more resistant to damage if dropped from several feet to the ground.

One of the reasons I haven't bought a more expensive quality writing instrument is that I am afraid I'll lose it.

A tip for keeping track of your pen is to keep it in a special place such as on your favorite desk. There are all types of stands, pen pouches and portfolios to hold your pen in a known place. Also, your pen can be engraved with your name so if misplaced it can be easily returned.

How will I know a Cross product when I see it in the store?

There are unique design features on all Cross products that identify them as Cross. For example, the frustro-conical top is a registered product trademark of the A.T. Cross Company. Other trademarks include engravings of the name "Cross" on the clips and/or caps of all writing instruments. To more easily identify a Cross writing instrument someone can simply glance at the distinctive conical top. Pencils have solid black, gold or chrome tops and ball-points are distinguished by an indent or disc.
